Educated privately Hertford Coll.,Oxford; Royal Coll. of Music. Spent 4 years in Berlin & Vienna. Contributed to Charlot's review,1926;composed Adam's Opera 1928. Has since written songs and instrumental music for many stage productions including The Good Companions, Alice in Wonderland, L'Aiglon, The Happy Hypocrite, Trespass, Ring Round the Moon, Penny Plain, Lyric Revue, Globe Revue, Airs on a Shoestring, Joyce Grenfell requests the Pleasure, Living for Pleasure. Musical scores for films include South Riding, Goodbye Mr Chips,The Lion has Wings, Dangerous Moonlight (Warsaw Concerto), Love on the Dole, Blithe Spirit, The Passionate Friends, Under Capricorn, Tom Brown's Schooldays, The Prince and the Showgirl, A Tale of Two Cities, The Greengage Summer, The Roman Spring of Mr Stone, The Waltz of the Toreadors, The War Lover. Remembered in Britain as composer of the Warsaw Concerto for the film Dangerous Moonlight and as accompanist to Joyce Grenfell, Richard Addinsell studied music in Berlin and Vienna and later enjoyed a career as a composer chiefly for the theatre and the cinema.
